How double elimination works

Double elimination is the fairest knockout format because a single bad game doesn't end your day: you have to lose twice to be eliminated. Everyone starts in the winners bracket. Lose once and you drop to the losers bracket (a.k.a. the back draw or consolation bracket); lose there and you're out. The unbeaten winners-bracket champion faces the losers-bracket survivor in the grand final.

Byes

As with single elimination, if your entrant count isn't a power of two the field is padded up and the top seeds get first-round byes β€” handled automatically above.

The grand final & bracket reset

The winners-bracket finalist arrives with zero losses; the losers-bracket finalist has one. If the losers-bracket player wins the first grand final, both now have one loss, so a deciding reset game is played. That's why double elim runs about 2N βˆ’ 2 games (up to 2N βˆ’ 1 with a reset).

The catch with paper double-elim

Seeding the winners bracket is easy (done above). The hard part is the losers-bracket drop pattern β€” which loser goes to which losers-bracket game each round so the same two players don't rematch too early. That bookkeeping is exactly what the free PlanMyPickle app automates: it wires the whole double-elimination bracket, advances and drops players live, and handles the grand final and reset for you.
